Canton 1836-1838, group of 11 letters sent to Mr. Davidson, Harris Farquhar & Co London. With various manuscript endorsements, e.g. “per Tigris”, “General Palmer”, “Marquess Camden”. and with range of ship letter postmarks (Gravesend, Liverpool, Deal, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Penzance), transit markings and manuscript postal charges. A fascinating correspondence about the early commercial scene in China in the period leading up to the Opium Wars. Also a Canton letter 1838 routed via St Helena and Cape of Good Hope, and an interesting manuscript folder entitled “Wm. Dent’s letter to Wm. Leslie and others, concerning his going out to China”. A fine impressive group with some fine content.
