Canton 1836-1838, group of 11 letters sent to Mr. Davidson, Harris Farquhar & Co London. With various manuscript endorsements, e.g. « per Tigris », « General Palmer », « Marquess Camden ». and with range of ship letter postmarks (Gravesend, Liverpool, Deal, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Penzance), transit markings and manuscript postal charges. A fascinating correspondence about the early commercial scene in China in the period leading up to the Opium Wars. Also a Canton letter 1838 routed via St Helena and Cape of Good Hope, and an interesting manuscript folder entitled « Wm. Dent’s letter to Wm. Leslie and others, concerning his going out to China ».
