Lot 41201 – China 1899, 3 very attractive newspaper wrappers sent from Canton to Wuchow.
1899, three very attractive newspaper wrappers sent from Canton to a member of I.M. Customs in Wuchow, unopened, complete with journals intact. All franked 1 cent (for unsealed wrapper; 1/2 c for two ounces), using 1897 Empress Dowager issues ½ cent and 1 cent, tied by Canton large dollar dater 20 APR 99. On the back of all are indistinct Wuchow Post Office 22 APR. A very attractive and scarce set of unbroken wrappers with colourful woodcut illustrations.
According to Tony Kwan census of Empress Dowager issues, only 3 domestic printed matters are recorded for the year 1899. Probably a similar item of the same correspondence is described by Kwan under ref. B-1899-020, but not illustrated.
