Description
1871-85 Two letters 1. Front of a letter from Thessaloniki (Jan. 25th, 1871) to Patras. Franked at 40 lepta with two 20 lepta of the “cleaned plates” printings. Red postmark “ΠΕΔ” or “ΠΛΙΡΩΜΕΝΟΝ ΕΞΟΤΕΡΙΚΟΝ ΔΗΚΕΩΜΑ” for “Paid to Foreign Destination”. 2. Registered letter from Larissa (Dec. 2/14, 1885) to Constantinople (Dec. 12/23, 1885) via Piraeus (Dec. 7/19, 1885) franked at the UPU rate of 45 lepta for a registered letter up to 15 grams (25 lepta for the domestic rate plus 20 lepta for the recommendation). Postmarks in black: “ΣΥΣΤΗΜΕΝΟΝ” & “Grèce – R” for “Recommendation”. 5 red wax seals on the back. The 40 lepta is from the cream papers with “control numbers” (1875/1880) and the 5 lepta is from the cream papers without “control number” (1880/1886). The two stamps are touched.
