Description
1868 Letter from Marseille (May 17/29, 1868) to Pireas (May 22/Jun. 2, 1868) insufficiently franked with a French 40 centimes type “Présidence” and taxed at the arrival at 50 lepta (written on red pencil), the complementary amount to reach the regular rate of 90 lepta for a letter up to 10 grams (single rate) according to the 1866 convention between Greece & France. Red postmark “Affranchissement Insuffisant” for “Insufficiently paid” and black handwritten “0,50” were apposed at departure.The stamps are from the consecutive Athens printings (1862/1867) and with good to large margins except the 40 lepta with one touched margin.
