Description
1867 Letter from Athens (Apr. 12/24, 1867) to Pietrasanta (Apr. 18/30, 1867) via Brindisi (Apr. 16/28, 1867) franked at 65 lepta corresponding to a letter up to 10 grams (single rate) transported by Austrian or Italians boats according to the 1864 convention between Greece & Italy and the circulaire of the Director of the Greek Post-offices of Jan. 5, 1865. Black maritime postmark “PIROSCAFI POSTALI ITALIANI” for “Italian Postal Boats” (“voie d’Italie”).
Red postmark “ΠΕΔ” or “ΠΛΙΡΩΜΕΝΟΝ ΕΞΟΤΕΡΙΚΟΝ ΔΗΚΕΩΜΑ” for “Paid to Foreign Destination”.
The stamps are from the consecutive Athens printings (1862/1867), all with large to very large margins. The 40 lepta is from the N-W corner of the sheet (position 1) and the 20 lepta is the so-called “liar”. Catalogue ref: Hellas 17a/19g/20Ia
