Description
1867 Letter from Athens (Apr. 12/24, 1867) to Pietrasanta (Apr. 18/30, 1867) via Brindisi (Apr. 16/28, 1867) franked at 65 lepta corresponding to a letter up to 10 grams (single rate) transported by Austrian or Italians boats according to the 1864 convention between Greece & Italy and the circulaire of the Director of the Greek Post-offices of Jan. 5, 1865. Black maritime postmark « PIROSCAFI POSTALI ITALIANI » for « Italian Postal Boats » (« voie d’Italie »).
Red postmark “ΠΕΔ” or “ΠΛΙΡΩΜΕΝΟΝ ΕΞΟΤΕΡΙΚΟΝ ΔΗΚΕΩΜΑ” for “Paid to Foreign Destination ».
The stamps are from the consecutive Athens printings (1862/1867), all with large to very large margins. The 40 lepta is from the N-W corner of the sheet (position 1) and the 20 lepta is the so-called « liar ». Catalogue ref: Hellas 17a/19g/20Ia
