Lot 61582 – 1899 envelope from Kampala with “double Queen” combination franking of British East Africa 2 1/2a and Uganda 4a
1899 (Jan 23) envelope from Kampala to England (Bishop Tucker correspondence) with “double Queen” combination franking of British East Africa 1896-1901 2 1/2a blue with Uganda 1898-1902 4a green (one corner placed over the edge of the envelope), with the 4a paying the internal rate (Uganda only joining the UPU in 1901) and the 2 1/2a paying the external rate (before news about the Imperial Penny Postage of 1a reached Uganda in March 1899), both tied by Kampala cds, reverse with Mombasa transit and Windermere arrival, a fine and very rare mixed franking with only three such covers recorded with these values on the same date which is also the earliest known usage of the Uganda issue; ex Dunstan and Minns.
