Lot 61675 – 1838-44, two entire letters to London from Veracruz and Cosala
1838-44 Two entire letters to London, the earlier from Veracruz to London, describing how the French captured the Fort at San Juan de Ulúa, which provoked the Pastry War (first French invasion of Mexico) for which very few letters offer mention, charged 9s 3d; the latter bearing “FRANCO/EN/COSALA” laureate postmark, paying inland rate with ms “Pagó 4 Rs” on reverse, British “VERACRUZ” ds also on back and 2s 3d rate for sea and local carriage on front.
