THE MOST IMPORTANT FRANKING OF PORTUGUESE PHILATELY AFTER THE FIRST ISSUE
1862-64, 50r green blue, two strips of four, two vertical strips of three, two pairs and four singles, 25r carmine-rose, die IV, pair, as well as single of 100r lilac, all used on large fragment in mixed franking with 1855-56 D. Pedro “Straight Hair” 100r lilac, strip of three, very good margins for the most part and overall freshness, cancelled or tied by oily neat strikes of “86” numeral hs, with matching framed “Louzã” hs adjacent; apart from the first issue, this is the most important franking of Portuguese Philately as a result of the following features: the only multiple mixed three-color franking recorded, the largest known franking of the 1862-64 D. Luis 50r value, an extraordinary usage of four different stamps including, and being even more difficult, two same 100r denominations originating from two different issues and featuring different kings; a major gem of Portuguese philately and a most stunning exhibition item; (Afinsa 9, 16, 17, 18); ex Gaudet and “Cascais” collection.
