Lot 60170 – 1850-54 5c applied on 1856 printed-matter cover front
1850-54 5c applied on 1856 printed-matter cover front from Milan via Sardinia to Montpellier, initially tied on 2 March, one day later the printed matter rate being completed with machine paper 15c, which was intentionally applied over the area of the 5c which showed the cancellation of the day before, so that the previous usage could not be misinterpreted as a fraud attempt, the 15c being affixed by using the gum at top and thus enabling to see the stamp below, then both stamps being tied by 3 March cds, with red “VIA DEGLI/STATI SARDI” instructional marking in red, Briançon red entry in France and ms “5” postage due on arrival alongside; both stamps with complete to large margins; a fascinating and probably unique usage on double printed-matter rate cover according to the 1851 Postal Convention.
Additional scans and images are being uploaded on a continuous basis, and the complete set of illustrations for all lots will be available by 1 June 2026.
