1842 wrapper to the Wesleyan Mission in London, ms “2/” rate, letter numbered by sender “8” at top right, reverse with manuscript “Turks Islands”, London 18 MY 42 arrival, very fine.
Note: In January 1842 the R.M.S.P. Co. established a bi-monthly West Indies mail service using Grand Turk as the distribution point for its branch services. The service was discontinued in October of the same year because of the generally unsuitable conditions in the anchorage. No Post Office was opened in Grand Turk until 11 December 1854. The manuscript marking was written on packet letters in transit and sorted at Grand Turk.
