Description

1901 (Feb 19th) a superbly executed 4d. hand painted essay for an unappropriated die with three-quarter head lithographed portrait and hand painted surround mounted on sunken card (60 x 75) showing manuscript date at top right with manuscript “C” at lower left and initialled EC (Ernest Cleave controller of stamps) at lower right; Rare.

Note the addition of a Crown on this essay above the head, an indication of the Kings declared wish that the crown should be included in the frame and not on the Royal image itself.
