Prior to the first booklet issue (16th March 1904), after much discussion, Treasury approval was given on 12th June 1903, for a new printing plate arranged in four panes of 60. three new plates were eventually approved and were ready on the 16th September: each booklet pane of 6 would be upside down in relation to its horizontal neighbour, allowing each to have a left hand selvedge for binding purposes.
1903 (31st July) 1d. stamp size die proof on glazed card affixed to striking book piece; very rare. cat. £2800.
