Description

In 1897 the revised 7d. rate covered parcels up to 5lbs. however in July 1906 this weight limit was extended to 7lbs, thus creating a far greater demand for the service and for a 7d. stamp. In January 1909 the introduction of a 7d. stamp was agreed, and on the 24th February De La Rue were requested to to submit new designs. on the 5th March 1909 three essays were submitted, of which the first found some favour though with the request for larger value tablets.

Essay No. 1 stamp size in slate on highly glazed paper; some minor rubbing not detracting from the very fresh and fine appearance; very rare. Cat £8,500. Ex “Maximus” (S.G. Auctions 1970).
