Lot 10188 – 1901 2/6d. cut down die proof in black on glazed card
1901 2/6d. cut down die proof in black on glazed card (68 x 51mm.) Ex De La Rue archives with lightened background in front of head Lettered “B” and annotated “Cancelled” in manuscript; a rare and important proof. Cat. £5500.
On the 22nd. October 1901, the Inland Revenue reported that they had, had a suggestion from De La Rue regarding the 2/6d. design, namely that he solid background in front of the head was too prominent As proof A; and that it should be vignetted as in B. This could be effected by using lines similar to those at the back of the head. The suggestion met with approval. Die B is inscribed on reverse “I.R. 11/99 Engraved by Turner” and was approved in principle on 7th November 1901.
