Description

FRANCE, 1849/50, 1fr Dark Carmine and 40c orange with margins to just in, used with 1850, 10c Bister in extremely fine condition, tied by partly clear strikes of “AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT” boxed handstamps (in error as postage was actually overpaid), Paris Oct. 6, 1852 double-circle datestamp on folded cover to New York, USA, red boxed “PD” handstamp, “5” in circle handstamp struck in New York for U.S. internal postage. A very spectacular transatlantic mail cover showing a
UNIQUE USE OF THE “INSUFFICIENT POSTAGE” CANCEL TO TIE STAMPS OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF FRANCE.

This cover was prepaid for the obsolete 15-decimes rate (20-centimes overpayment of the new 13-decimes rate). It was carried on the Cunarder Europa, departing Liverpool Oct. 9, arriving New York Oct. 21. Signed by the experts Roumet, Calves and Pascal Scheller.
