Description
1915-16 Percy Catling’s search expedition of the gold-laden sailing ship general grant which sunk in 1866: “GENERAL GRANT AUCKLAND ISLANDS EXPEDITION, 1/2d Green”, a horizontal strip of three (very mild toning at top) tied to a very rare cover by two strikes of “Auckland Islands / 23 Mar 1916 / Catling’s Expedition” double circle postmarks, an additional third strike alongside, addressed to a MR. J.W.H. Bannerman in Bluff, red “per Enterprise” manuscript endorsement at left, very fine. One of only three covers recorded by bearing these expedition labels. A major rarity of New Zealand’s Antarctic postal history. Catalogue
