Description
1873, pair of covers from the Oriental Secretary Thomas Hughes at the British Embassy in Constantinople, with 1873 (Mar 1) envelope sent via the scarce “Winter route” to England with 1864-79 1d red pl.140 and 1865-73 4d vermilion pl.12 tied by barred “C” ovals, paying the 5d rate which was only in use from Nov. 1872 to Apr. 1873, reverse with embassy crown hs, despatch and arrival, some minor foxing, plus matching cover from same correspondence sent at 4d rate on 3rd Sep. 1873 with 4d vermilion pl.14 and a different embassy hs on reverse, a useful duo for display, ex Richard Malim.
