Lot 30993 – Romania 1928 UNRECORDED Bucovăț prison censorship marking
1928 Bucovăț prison censorship marking. Stationery postcard sent on 20/2/1928, addressed to Constantin Agiu, a communist political prisoner at Bucovăț prison, Dolj county. The item bears a very clear and complete strike in violet of the unrecorded “Inchisoarea Centrala / VAZUT / BUCOVAT” (“Central Prison / Examined / Bucovat”). Very little is known about this prison, which is not even recorded in the comprehensive two-volume work by Dr. Dan Grecu, “Represiune si miscari de populatie in Romania 1921–1964” (2021) (“Repression and population movements in Romania, 1921–1964”). The Romanian Communist Party (Partidul Comunist Român) was founded in 1921 and declared illegal in 1924. Constantin Agiu was a communist leader, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Domains, and President of the Great National Assembly (1948). This postcard dates from his illegalist period. Some light creases, but an interesting and rare historical document.
