1848, Netherlands East Indies, complete folded letter datelined Fort de Kock 9.8 1848, sent by overland mail via Marseille to Leiden, Netherlands. On front is somewhat faint but clear strike of large red oval “Franco Zee Brief Padang” (Wolff de Beer 209a), and rather well-struck circular “Purifié au Lazaret Malte” for Malta letter disinfection. Also written notations “Landmail Via Marseille, 7g. Franco” and “F de K 9.8 1848 S.W. Kust”, as well as taxation of 140 cents for second weight letter (rate valid for Marseille overeland 1816-1848). Mounted on a page with full analysis. A most attractive and rare overland mail from a military fortification in the Dutch East Indies.
