Description
1852–57 3d Brown-Red on Medium Wove – Simcoe to Andover via New York / Cunard “Arabia”3d brown-red on medium wove paper (defective), tied by “43” numeral (earliest recorded strike) on envelope with SIMCOE FE 11 1858 circular datestamp, endorsed “Via Halifax” and marked “More to pay 4½d”. The Halifax route was later barred via Hamilton, as the letter missed the steamer from Halifax and was diverted to New York, carried on Cunard “Arabia” via Liverpool 28/2, with PKT. LETTER handstamp on reverse, arriving Andover.Rate Explanation: The original Halifax route rating was cancelled. The letter was taxed “6d stg.”, which combined with the Beaver 3d totals 10½d cy., slightly above the correct 10d cy transatlantic rate.Comparative Example: A similar cover from the same correspondence appears in Luebke collection.Provenance: Richardson, Steinhart, Skywalk
