Lot 60311 – 1871-1909 1/2a Orange-Brown perf 12.5 recess printed
1871-1909 1/2a Orange-Brown perf 12.5 recess printed Plate 4 part sheet of 9 x 16 (144 stamps) showing the UNLISTED PANTOGRAPH ERROR. not only does the pantograph engrave the surface of the stamp steel printing plate but it also adjusts the depth of the engraving. Like all seven valies of the third issue, the 1/2a value had four plates produced with each plate having eight arm pantograph engraving eight stamps in a vertical column to the top half of the 240 (16 x 15) stamp plate and eight stamps in a vertical column to the bottom half of the printing plate. Alex holland plated the 1/2 a third issue and designated the plate with shallow depth pantograph cut of eight stamps in PLATE 4. the eight stamps are from the top half of the sheet 11,26,41,56,71, 86, 101 and 116. The shallow depth error seems to slightly reduced as you go from stamp 11 to 116. Ex Dan Walker (SG £576)
