Réalisée lors du Grand Tour de l’artiste en Italie, cette esquisse représente le couvent de San Bonaventura sur la colline du Palatin, au-dessus du Forum Romain. L’architecture monastique domine un paysage de ruines et de végétation animé de figures populaires, dans une composition équilibrée entre histoire et nature.
L’œuvre témoigne du regard romantique de Preller sur les sites antiques de Rome, et de sa maîtrise du dessin au trait fin et hachuré. Cette période italienne marque durablement son œuvre à venir.

Executed during the artist’s Grand Tour in Italy, this drawing depicts the Franciscan convent of San Bonaventura on the Palatine Hill, overlooking the Roman Forum. The monastic architecture rises above a landscape of ruins and vegetation, animated by figures in traditional dress, in a composition balancing history and nature.
The work reflects Preller’s romantic vision of Rome’s ancient sites and his mastery of fine, hatched pencil drawing. This formative Italian period would leave a lasting imprint on his later work.
