Gupta Empire, Samudragupta, c. 335-375, AV dinar, 7.70 g. (20 mm). Obverse: ‘javelin’ type; king wearing royal tunic standing, holding javelin and sacrificing at altar, with garuda standard in left field, Brahmi inscription Samudra below his left arm, circular Brahmi legend around. Reverse: goddess Lakshmi enthroned, holding diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi inscription at right, tamgha left, dotted border around.
EF with good lustre and frosty surfaces. Very rare in this EF condition.
This is not the Rajadanda type, but the javelin type with the spear head being struck off the flan.
