Gupta Empire, Samudragupta, c. 335-375, AV dinar, 7.69 g. (20 mm). Obverse: ‘archer’ type; king standing left holding a longbow in left hand and arrow in right, garuda standard at left, Brahmi inscription below his left arm, circular Brahmi legend around. Reverse: goddess Lakshmi enthroned facing, holding diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi inscription at right, Apratiratha, tamgha left, dotted border around. About EF as struck, underlying lustre shows through.
The famous archer type of Gupta coinage was first struck during the reign of Samudragupta, but this type from his reign remains rather rare.
