Lot 10031 – India, Post-Mauryan, c. 200-100 BC, uncertain location, AV 2.16 g.
India, Post-Mauryan, c. 200-100 BC, uncertain location, AV 2.16 g. Obverse: tree on railing, showing leaves and branches. Reverse: blank.
Good VF, slightly off-center.
We have not been able to identify this coin, or to find anything similar sold in recent years. The tree protected by a railing has a rich iconographic tradition beginning with the earliest punchmarked coins of India, and especially with the rise of Buddhism, when pilgrims visited the Mahabodhi Tree that was fenced off to prevent the cutting of branches.
