Inscriptional Single on Cover to Ireland
1840 1d Black, Plate 8 (TE) Lower Marginal Stamp with partial inscription “abels ABOVE the A” on Wrapper
An exceptionally rare and historically fascinating usage, this lower marginal 1d Black from Plate 8 is tied to a wrapper (no sideflaps) from Bridgenorth, 3 February 1841, addressed to Carndonagh, Ireland. The front bears contemporary annotations recording the results of the Walsall election, including the declaration of John Gladstone’s victory, offering both philatelic and historical significance.
The wrapper is backstamped Dublin transit, 4 February 1841, and the stamp retains its marginal inscription, an element highly prized by collectors.
