Lot 51574 – 1867 (Sep 6) envelope from France to Monferrat (Italy), bearing France 40c, red crayon “MISSENT TO MONTSERRAT WEST INDIES”
1867 (Sep 6) envelope (with enclosure) from France to Casale, Monferrat (Piedmont, Italy), bearing France 40c, showing boxed and oval-framed “pd” in red, London Paid c.d.s. (7.9), red crayon “MISSENT TO MONTSERRAT WEST INDIES” on front and back, Montserrat cds (4.10) arrival and sent back to Italy with following transits on reverse, Calais entry ds (30.10), Paris to Lyon cds (30.10) and Casale arrival cds (1.11). Fine and attractive. Only two covers of this very rare Montserrat missent marking are recorded. (Note: the other recorded one was sent 1875 from Trinidad to Martinique and shows this manuscript postal marking written from the same hand). This is probably the only known classic France cover to Montserrat, British West Indies.
