1839 (March 23rd) Folded letter sheet from Montevideo, Uruguay to London, landed in transit at Dublin and rated “5/9” and being calculated in the following way 8d Ship rate & 15d Dublin to London total 1/11 x3 = 5/9, paying the treble letter rate up to 1 ounce, showing on reverse “*/19JU19/1839” and a long red framed “SHIP LETTER/DUBLIN” contingency handstamp (DF No.451), an important rarity and exhibition showpiece. The only complete strike of this ship letter marking so far recorded.
