Lot 10639 – Veracruz 50c lithographed pair on registered front
ONE OF THE FEW REGISTERED ITEMS IN EXISTENCE
Veracruz 50c green lithographed (consignment 39-1866), vertical pair with very good margins on registered cover front to Mexico, dated October 3, 1866 with framed registration hs “Certificación a Vera-Cruz/Salió en___” and tied by dispatch cds (Schatzkès #1747, 1757A). All registered mail survived are fronts, as the receiving post office had to cut the front of the letter and have the addressee sign on its back as proof of receipt; in this instance, the addressee was an employee of the post office. A delightful and most rare usage.
Provenance: García Larrañaga and Quast.
