Lot 10436 – 1796, Sept. 8. Ship’s register cover of the “Rey Carlos” frigate, sai
1796 (Sept 8). Ship’s register cover of the “Rey Carlos” frigate, sailing from Lima to Cádiz (Spain), entering the mails with “Franca” & “Lima” straight-line postmarks in red struck on dispatch, with various incomplete red wax seals on reverse featuring the coat of arms of Spain (as sealed correspondence consequently being subjected to the payment of postal fees), alongside dated 8 September and marked “30 Rs” in manuscript, this being the rate for 3 ounces weight to be paid by the sender as per postal rules. On front at base, annotated as consigned on September 28, 1796. A remarkable transatlantic ship’s register cover, this being the only example documented originating from Peru, and one of just three known from South America.
Provenance: Sitjà.
