Description
1813-1900. “Paraguay Siglo XIX” collection mounted on 80 pages, all written up for exhibition. The exhibit commences with two very scarce cover and cover front from the Spanish colonial period, continuing with a display of stampless covers comprising five items with the oval “Adm Gral de Correos de la R. del P.”; (also non genuine cover franked with Argentina ABN 5c it is presented as having been used in Humaita during the Triple Alliance War). The issued stamps include the first issue with essays, a study of prominent characteristics in different positions for the 1r, including multiples up to a block of 25, a complete plate reconstruction, two very scarce 1r single frankings on cover (fewer than 20 recorded), 2r & 3r used (each 5) and unused (each 2), first-issue reprints in full sheets; a remarkable display of “5” surcharged values with 1r in eight used including two pairs, outstanding mint block of 4 (one of three recorded) and block of 20 (one of just two known), six singles unused and with varieties, the 2r with three rare unused and four used, 3r with six unused and three use and some varieties. The second issue is represented in mint blocks of four, third issue with 10r imperf. block of six, and two very rare blocks of four, colour essays in blocks of four; the provisional “1” & “2” on 10r in two mint multiples and few used examples including one rare pair, complete sheet of imperforate 1r from the first issue surcharged with “1”. The 1881 4th issue displays mint blocks of four, four composite colour essays of 1c+2c+4c or colour plate proofs in multiples, the issued stamps with varieties and rare fragment of newspaper to Buenos Aires franked by 2c. 1884 5th issue comprising composite essay sheet of 10 with four denominations and colour proofs on card, multiples and scarce 5c single franking on cover, the largest 1c used block and varieties. From 1892 onwards including the rest of the XIXth century issues with essays and proofs, multiples, unusual covers also sent to Europe, varieties, etc. In addition officials and telegraphs, the officials including black essays on card and specimens for the first issue, a rare second issue cover from the Presidency of the Republic to the Consul in Buenos Aires a scarce 1889 and 15c strip of four on registered cover, as well as a section with a dozen of unused postal stationery items. Generally in very fine condition for this territory affected by tropical conditions.A magnificent opportunity to obtain a very good basis for an advanced collection and to start collecting a fascinating and most exotic territory, of great significance as Paraguay is the country with the most scarce material in South American philately.
