1866-78, Multiples: An astonishing collection containing many highlights, including amongst others: 1866 “Black Beard” with vertical block of 8 used, 20r in various blocks larger than four used and unused and in the scarcer dark shade, 50r with impressive marginal block of 8 used, rare mint block of 4 on thick paper, 100r up to vertical block of 10 used and rare mint strip of 4 on thick paper, the unique used block of six from the scarce first die, 200r in two used blocks of 4, 500r with two mint pairs and numerous used blocks up to a multiple of 8; Roulette “Black Beard” including 10r with several blocks incl. three mint blocks of 6 and one used block of 8, 20r with four unused blocks of 4, 50r in rare used block of 4, 100r mint block of 4, 200r with mint and used blocks of 4, 500r in mint pair and two used strips of 4; Roulette “White Beard” including 10r comprising many mint multiples up to two blocks of 25 and numerous used blocks, the 20r with impressive marginal blocks of 16 & 18, 50r with several blocks of 4 (incl. one mint on bluish paper), strip of 4 used on bluish paper and block of 6 used, 100r being very rich in blocks up to 6 unused and up to 8 used, 200r used strip of three, 260r represented in four unused blocks of 4, 300r found in up to block of 4 unused and up to blocks of 6 used, 700r in mint and used pairs as well as one strip of 3 used, 1’000r in one unused pair and three used, as well as scarce block of 4 used; Unissued “Auriverde” in various multiples up to a block of 16 without gum. One of the best and most spectacular assemblies of this kind we have ever seen offered at auction as one lot, including many examples with fewer than five or ten items recorded, with some ranked as the largest or second largest recorded and originating from renowned collections of the past.
