A UNIQUE CANCELLATION AND AN EXTRAORDINARY “SEMI-XIPHOPAGUS” USAGE ON COVER
1843, 60r black, late impression, position 18 from the First Composite Plate, a key positional piece from the lower left corner of the pane, large to enormous margins on two sides clearly displaying the corner plus an additional interpanneau rule at base, a magnificent “semi-xiphopagus” example used on reverse of 1st April 1844 entire letter from Jacarey via Pindaminhangaba to Rio de Janeiro, with the stamp cancelled in transit by framed “PINDAMI/NHAN/GABA” hs in brown (Ayres 1402). A manuscript note by Saoul Newbury above the stamp has been erased and central file fold clear of the franking. The only “Bull’s Eye” cover recorded from this locality, as well as an extremely rare letter exhibiting a “semi-xiphopagus” which additionally represents a key positional piece. Cert.
