Lot 10150 – 1843, 90r black, late impression, “cracked plate” – “chapa quebrada” variety, used at Paranaguá
Paranaguá (SP) 1843, 90r black, late impression, a well margined example featuring the “cracked plate” – “chapa quebrada” variety consisting in colourless area below the “9” at left within the ‘eye’, where a black flaw is located with traces of the printing ink extending to the left margin, and the frame line being broken in two places at left, cancelled by framed “PARANAGUÁ.” hs in black (Ayres 1384). A very fine example of this exceedingly scarce variety, being further enhanced by an unusual cancellation; no examples of this rarity were found in the Luis Alemany Indarte and Hugo Goeggel collections. (RHM $20’000).
