Lot 10069 – 1840 (Aug 4). entire letter from Aldeia Nova (Portugal) to Vitoria
1840 (Aug 4). Entire letter from Aldeia Nova (Portugal) to Vitoria (ES), with light strike of “Lixa” oval applied in transit at base, entering Brazil at Rio de Janeiro with corresponding “Rio/De/Janeiro” circle handstamp in brown, charged “120” on dispatch with “280” réis due on delivery, with three good strikes of “Vitoria” straight-line hs in red. A rare incoming transatlantic mail and, in case of being genuine (it requires a certificate), the only example recorded of the “Vitoria” postmark (unlisted in the RHM catalogue). An additional 1838 letter (toned) sent by the same sender and also addressed to Vitoria is included, bearing the same postmarks except “Vitoria”. (Sold “as is”).
