1822 (July 1st). Cover from Maranhão to Bahia, bearing “MARANHAO/POR TERRA” hs in red denoting the overland service, which was established as an alternative to the maritime route during the months of very hazardous conditions to navigate along the northern coast of Brazil, rated at “240” réis, being a high rate for the overland mail. Cover extensively cleaned and with ink erosions; part of the letter has been backed to preserve the place of origin and date. One of the few items recorded, which regularly exhibit the strike unclear.
