Lot 20067 – 1856 Mexico District 1 Real Yellow on certified front
Mexico District 1r yellow on August 21, 1856 registered cover front from Mexico City to Morelia, with framed registration marking at lower left and tied by the earliest cancel used in Mexico City (Schatzkès #826), with signature of teh addressee on back (visible at top) as a proof of delivery. The rate should have been at least 8 reales, so part of the franking was missing at left of the stamp, nevertheless it is very rare registered mail in the first month of issue.
Note: All registered mail required the signature of the addressee on the front (exceptionally on the back) as a proof of delivery. Then the front was kept in the files of the post office of dispatch during two years, before being destroyed. This fact proves that the items which have survived are exceptional, with few in existence.
