Lot 30818 – 1851 (Dec 3) entire from New York to Mexico via New Orleans, Havana and Kingston, with “No / Detained for Postage” hs with m/s “1/4” applied in Kingston
1851 (Dec 3) entire from New York to Mexico via New Orleans, Havana and Kingston, with “No / Detained for Postage” hs with m/s “1/4” applied in Kingston, as the British Packet Agent at Kingston did not accept the “BRITISH / 25” US oval hs (rare), and the letter was held from Jan 20th to Feb 13th before the US Consul settled the difference, some fold splits, attractive and unique example of the “Detained for Postage” marking; ex Napier, Risvold and Surtees.
Note: The US Postal Office Department introduced a new prepaid rate for letters to foreign countries (July 1851) bit appears not to have fully agreed the procedure with the British.
