Lot 30818 – 1851 (Dec 3) entire from New York to Mexico via New Orleans, Havana and Kingston, with « No / Detained for Postage » hs with m/s « 1/4 » applied in Kingston
1851 (Dec 3) entire from New York to Mexico via New Orleans, Havana and Kingston, with « No / Detained for Postage » hs with m/s « 1/4 » applied in Kingston, as the British Packet Agent at Kingston did not accept the « BRITISH / 25 » US oval hs (rare), and the letter was held from Jan 20th to Feb 13th before the US Consul settled the difference, some fold splits, attractive and unique example of the « Detained for Postage » marking; ex Napier, Risvold and Surtees.
Note: The US Postal Office Department introduced a new prepaid rate for letters to foreign countries (July 1851) bit appears not to have fully agreed the procedure with the British.
