Description
1823 (January 29th) Folded lettersheet sent locally within Dublin, showing a superb strike of the type 2 crowned oval TO BE DELIVER’D FREE in black, a wonderful showpiece.Note: Crowned handstamps TO BE DELIVER’D FREE were in used from 1816 to1831. Edward James Baynes, as comptroller of the Dublin Penny Post used two types of the crown handstamp to exempt official mail from local postal charges to which ordinary franked letters were liable.
