1838 (September 22nd) Soldiers letter from gunner Crampton, Horse Artillery in Mhow, Bengal to Newark Upon Trent, landed at Kilkeel, Co. Down and transited through Dublin. The cover shows a manuscript “Ship” erased over s straight line KILKEEL in black. Provenance: T.V.Roberts.
One of only three recorded Kilkeel ship letters.
Note: Rated “1/5” paying the 1s1d Kilkeel to New Upon Trent for 354 miles, plus 2d Dublin to Holyhead and another 2d Menai Bridge and Conway Bridge, this was erased and recharged “3” (2d India Sea and the 1d Soldiers concessionary rate. The cover was counter signed by the Lt. Col at the lower left.
