Description

1756 (November 17th) Folded letter from Navan to Dublin, endorsed and franked “free Jo Ashe“, showing a squat type NAUAN in black (U for V) and a Dublin GR CROWN inspectors handstamp in the first year of use. Letter written by Thos. Barry stating “as privilege is now almost out I would not miss this opportunity of writing to you“, hence the letter was franked by favour, (illegal) and rated “4”, being a contemporary statement on how the Free Franking system was abused, an interesting historical item.
