Description

THE EARLIEST RECORDED PHILATELIC GAME

1868ca. Memory game of about 210 wooden pieces featuring reproductions of stamps printed on paper on one side and portions of a map on the reverse, the stamps with mostly European issues from 1862-68 but also issues from USA incl. locals, India, Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, etc., contained in a wooden box with an illustrated label showing the Coats of Arms of Great Britain, Austria, France, USA and Sitting Helvetia of Switzerland on the lid, along with trilingual “Brief-Marken / Postage Stamps / Timbres-Poste”, an extraordinary artefact, probably a unique item of early stamp collecting memorabilia

Additional scans and images are being uploaded on a continuous basis, and the complete set of illustrations for all lots will be available by 1 June 2026.
