1927 (29 June) Richard E Byrd flight across the Atlantic, envelope bearing 5c blue and cancelled NEW YORK NY G.P.O. Jun 21 2PM, carried by airplane “America” on its flight from New York to Paris and crashed, arrival marking on face VAR-S/-MER CALVADOS 2-7-29, Richard Byrd was the first to carry official mail from the US across the Atlantic, the flight ended abruptly in the waters off the French coast, severely affecting about 90% of the mail, very fine and rare (Müller 35’000 points), cert.
