Extract from Jal Cooper’s “Early India Cancellations” about Talook Tappal handstamps
Type 2c: Whilst describing the (type 2 cancels), I cannont refrain from referring here to one more cancellation, viz., a circle formed by bars of 11 lines. The diameter of the circle varies from 18 to 20mm. This particular cancellation is found on 1854 issues as well as East India stamps but they have been found from one district only, viz., Tanjore, and in Mr. C. D. Desai’s valuable collection there are several originals with this cancellation but with the names of different post offices in most interesting and different types of postmarks, some of which read, “Tanjore T.T. Puttoocottah,” “Tanjore Talook Tappal – Anthangy,” “Tanjore Talook Tappal – Manarcoody,” “Tanjore Talook Tappal – Puttoocottah,” “Tanjore Talook Tappal – Trinady.” Cannot one call this cancellation as type 2c, particularly when it does not correspond in any manner with any of the later types? In afact, I have done so for many years and collectors to whom I have supplied these examples also classified them as type 2c in their collections. Auction
