Description
1862 Small envelope from New York to Thurles, Ireland at the 24 cents Treaty rate via American packet, carried by Inman line “Edinburgh,” overseas postage unpaid, drop letter of 1c paid with 1861 1c blue (creased), very fine, sent via Queenstown and Cork, large “1s” denoting 12d due from addressee (type peculiar to Ireland), sent to Archdeacon Cotton of Thurles, ms “Enquire at TCD for Elliots Bibles” and other notes, sl. reduced at right, fine and rare Note: Archdeacon Henry Cotton (1789 – 1879) was rector for 44 years at St. Mary’s Church, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Written works include ‘ Fiat Justitia’  (1835), ‘Fasti Ecclesiæ Hibernicæ’ (1848-50)  and ‘List of Editions of the Bible 1505-1850’ (1852)
