Lot 60123 – 1847-54 GB embossed 6d lilac, with left sheet marg

1847-54 GB embossed 6d lilac, with left sheet margin, paying the uniform British Packet rate of sixpence, used on cover from Berbice “via Steamer” to Scotland, cancelled by penstrokes, with despatch cds of Berbice (small sans-serif) MR 24 1856 on reverse. As the British Guiana stamps then current were only valid in the colony, prepaid mail to Great Britain required the use of British stamps. Extremely rare use of an embossed sixpenny from British Guiana, and probably the earliest GB used in cover from the colony. Unlisted in SG. Expertise: Cert. BPA (2014)
