ONLY THREE COVERS RECORDED
1840 Large part folded cover from Wolverhampton to Brosely, franked 2d blue, lettered EB, four good margins, tied by crisp clear red Maltese cross and with the all important departure backstamp of WOLVERHAMPTON/MY.6.1840 in red, an important showpiece and great rarity (SG £160’000)
Note: May 8th has been generally accepted as the first day of usage of the 2d. blue, as it is thought that it was on this date that it became available to the public. A single example used on May 6th and another single used on May 7th, have been discovered in recent years, this notwithstanding, the cover offered here represents one of only three recognised official first day covers
